Do you enjoy your job?

I love what I do..I enjoy all the different aspects of my job, research, training mentoring….maybe not filing!

I think it is because I am doing something that develops me as a person, and personal development is one of my core values.

But like many people I have had to make sacrifices in order to do what I enjoy.  I no longer earn as much as I did, and I have fewer opportunities to work creatively within a team.  The upsides are that I have a better work life blance, less stress and I feel more intellectually challenged.

Work is really important to me. In many ways it is how I define myself.  But I know from experience that work can be very stressful.  I made my work more fulfilling by asking myself:

What do I enjoy doing most?

Are their any issues that I need to address?

Do I have opportunities to use the knowledge and skills I have gained over my lifetime?

Am I committed to what I am being asked to do?

Do I fit in with the culture of the organisation I am working for?

I was very lucky to have access to a mentor who helped me to recognise what I do well and who gave me positive and constructive feedback. My mentor also helped me to clarify my values and to identify what made me unique…but perhaps most importantly he helped me to discover my purpose in life.

Who has helped you to find career satisfaction and how?
