How to Stop Worrying

Take charge: worrying is good in moderation, as it keeps you on your toes, but wallowing is pointless. Accept what you cannot change and get on with the things you can.

  • Manage expectations: Set clear goals, involving colleagues and client, but recognise that these will change. If demands get excessive and timescales unrealistic, review the situation. Pinpoint worries and communicate them to your team.
  • Get to the heart: If you are worried about a meeting, is it more your relationship with the client or your fear of failure? Understand the root of your anxiety and do something about it.
  • Think positively: Optimists live longer and achieve more. A positive outlook allows us to bounce back more quickly when mistakes are made.
  • When it all goes wrong, don’t panic. Playing down negative outcomes will help to quell distress.
  • Take a bird’s eye view. Imagine you are very far away from the situation. When your thinking is not being affected by emotions, you can see more clearly what needs to be done.
  • Change your mind: Instead of dreading working with a difficult colleague change how you see them. This will prevent unhelpful emotions taking over.
  • Talk to people: Share your concerns with colleagues who have been through similar experiences. You will gain insights and coping strategies, and expressing your feelings reduces anxiety.
  • Escape: Shifting you focus brings mental and physical relief. You will return with a fresh perspective, ready to tackle the issues

With almost 44% of those questioned by the CIPD admitting to being under pressure once or twice a week and the estimated annual cost to business at Ł9.6billion per annum- it is imperative that both employers and employees tackle this growing concern to health

Books prescribed to combat stress

Workers suffering from stress are to be prescribed books instead of medicines under a new NHS scheme that is being launched to coincide with World Mental Health Day. The aim of the scheme is to provide people experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues with options on how to manage their situation. The books chosen are well-respected and offer a range of advice and techniques to assist in the healing process. See Useful Resources for details of the prescribed books
